The PROTECT – Promoting Regional Identity, Traditions and Sustainable Cultural Tenacity project brought together partners from Romania, Hungary and Ukraine to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the border region. Through festivals, workshops, cultural exchanges and educational activities, the project encouraged local communities—especially young people—to discover, experience and value the traditions that connect the three countries.
One of the project’s flagship events was the “Echoes of Tradition” Folkloric Festival, held at the Ardud Citadel, where traditional music, dance, crafts and gastronomy were presented alongside contemporary artistic interpretations. By creating a vibrant meeting place for artists, cultural organisations and local communities, the festival strengthened intercultural dialogue and demonstrated how traditional heritage can remain relevant for new generations.
To ensure a lasting impact beyond the project’s lifetime, the partners also developed the multilingual cookbook “Traditional Cuisine Without Borders”, featuring more than 30 traditional recipes from Romania, Hungary and Ukraine in English, Hungarian, Romanian and Ukrainian. Together with the project’s photo album, the publication showcases the region’s shared cultural heritage while providing an educational resource that can be enjoyed and reused by cultural institutions, schools, tourism organisations and anyone interested in the traditions of the Carpathian border region.
