Progress in Development of Traumatological Care – TRAUMAHUA

The TRAUMAHUA project (HUSKROUA/23/RI/2.1/001) is improving trauma and surgical care in the cross-border region of Hungary and Ukraine by investing in modern medical facilities, innovative equipment, and joint professional training. Led by St. Damian Greek Catholic Hospital in Kisvárda (HU) together with Uzhhorod City Multidisciplinary Clinical Hospital (UA), the project addresses the urgent need for reliable, high-quality healthcare in an area heavily affected by road accidents and, on the Ukrainian side, by war casualties.

Modern facilities for safer patient care

In Kisvárda, the traumatology department is undergoing extensive renovation, including the creation of larger, fully accessible bathrooms in patient wards. Designed with mobility needs in mind, these facilities will make hospital stays more comfortable for patients using wheelchairs or walking aids, while supporting a quicker recovery process.

In Uzhhorod, the hospital is preparing to purchase state-of-the-art surgical equipment, such as electrosurgical systems that allow surgeons to simultaneously cut tissue and coagulate blood vessels. This technology significantly improves the safety and speed of operations, especially in trauma and emergency care. Procurement procedures are already under way, expanding the hospital’s capacity to respond to urgent medical needs.

Cross-border cooperation

The two hospitals are located only 50 km apart along the busy E573 highway, where serious road accidents frequently occur. Under TRAUMAHUA, Hungarian and Ukrainian doctors will not only treat patients more effectively in upgraded wards but also establish joint professional protocols and conduct training sessions to harmonise care. This cooperation ensures that patients, including war-wounded civilians and soldiers in Ukraine, receive faster, safer, and higher-quality treatment.

Why it matters

TRAUMAHUA strengthens the resilience of healthcare systems on both sides of the border by combining infrastructure upgrades, cutting-edge equipment, and professional cooperation. The project provides better conditions for trauma patients and war wounded, while building a foundation for lasting cross-border collaboration in healthcare.
