WWF-Romania – Filiala Maramures Association is pleased to announce the official signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Maramures Mountains Nature Park Administration and the Maramures Forestry Directorate. These agreements lay the foundation for sustainable and coordinated management of wildlife habitats in the region.
Under Activity 2.1, a pilot restoration project will target at least 5 hectares of meadows in the Maramures Mountains, aiming to improve habitats for large carnivores, including bears, wolves, and lynx. The interventions include mowing and overseeding forest meadows and planting wild fruit trees and shrubs along forest edges, enhancing food availability for wildlife, and maintaining a mosaic landscape that supports high biodiversity.
These nature-based interventions not only restore vital feeding areas for herbivores and bears but also help prevent human-wildlife conflicts by keeping wildlife within natural habitats. By improving ecological connectivity, these efforts benefit the entire ecosystem, ensuring movement corridors for large carnivores while protecting local communities and their livelihoods.
The signed MoUs mark a crucial milestone, ensuring that restoration measures are implemented in close cooperation with forest and park authorities, securing the long-term sustainability of these efforts. This pilot initiative will serve as a replicable best practice for wildlife habitat restoration across Romania and beyond.
