The CULT.ROUTE project (HUSKROUA/23/RI/2.2/054) strengthens cultural cooperation and sustainable tourism by extending the thematic route of castles across the Hungary–Romania–Ukraine border region. By connecting historic sites in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, Satu Mare, and Ivano-Frankivsk, the project enhances the visibility of shared cultural heritage while supporting regional identity and local economic development.
Bringing historic landmarks back into focus
A key milestone of the project was reached in August 2025, with the rehabilitation of the roof of the Tapay Mansion in Fehérgyarmat successfully completed. Built in the 18th century, the Baroque-style mansion is an important architectural landmark and today serves a social function as a day home for people with disabilities. The renovation safeguards the building’s long-term preservation and prepares it for inclusion in the expanded castle route.
Revitalising cultural heritage in Livada
Another flagship location of the project is Vécsey Castle in Livada (Satu Mare County) — one of the most remarkable Baroque monuments of the region. While the castle and its surrounding dendrological park have suffered decades of deterioration, CULT.ROUTE marks a decisive step towards renewal.
The project focuses on the rehabilitation of the historic park, restoring it as a public green space for residents and visitors, while laying the groundwork for the future restoration of the castle building itself. Once revitalised, the park and castle will become a focal point for community life and tourism.
Connecting heritage with modern tourism
Beyond physical investments, the project integrates IT-based promotion tools, an integrated website, and joint cross-border marketing activities to increase the visibility of the thematic route. Guided tours, professional exchanges, and a cross-border castle festival will further strengthen cooperation between cultural institutions and attract visitors to lesser-known heritage sites.
Why it matters
CULT.ROUTE demonstrates how cultural heritage can drive sustainable development. By restoring key landmarks and connecting them through a shared thematic route, the project turns history into a living asset — supporting tourism, community engagement, and long-term cross-border cooperation.
