The HOSPITALS project (HUSKROUA/23/RI/2.1/032) is enhancing access to healthcare in the Hungary–Ukraine border region by introducing innovative breast and lymphatic system screening services and strengthening prevention. Supported by the Interreg VI-A NEXT Hungary–Slovakia–Romania–Ukraine Programme, the project promotes early detection, modern diagnostics, and improved health awareness among local communities, including disadvantaged groups.
Launch of the HOSPITALS project in Nyíregyháza
The opening conference of the project was organised by the Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County Teaching Hospital in Nyíregyháza, at the Jósa András Hospital, on 6 November 2025. The event introduced the objectives and planned activities of the cross-border healthcare cooperation, highlighting the shared challenges and joint commitment of Hungarian and Ukrainian partners.
Modern screening infrastructure for better prevention
A key aim of the HOSPITALS project is to ensure that breast and lymphatic system screenings are available in a modern, safe, and widely accessible form in the border region. As part of this effort:
-
new mammography examination rooms will be established in Nyíregyháza and Mátészalka,
-
equipped with renewed building engineering and radiation protection systems,
-
and fitted with advanced diagnostic technologies, including tomosynthesis mammography units, automated ultrasound systems, and biopsy devices.
These investments will significantly improve diagnostic accuracy and provide a more comfortable, safer experience for patients.
Prevention, pilot screenings, and community outreach
The infrastructural developments are complemented by a range of health promotion campaigns and pilot screening programmes, targeting young people, families, and vulnerable groups. These pilots will help test new screening approaches, ensuring their long-term applicability in everyday healthcare services.
Healthcare professionals from both sides of the border will engage in joint knowledge sharing, training, and experience exchange, creating a common professional foundation for effective prevention and early diagnosis. This cooperation supports sustainable service development and strengthens trust between cross-border medical institutions.
Cross-border cooperation that saves lives
The conference underlined that healthcare improvements are most effective when they go beyond national borders. By combining modern infrastructure, innovative diagnostic tools, and joint professional work, the HOSPITALS project aims to create long-lasting change in the region’s approach to prevention.
Early screening can save lives — and the HOSPITALS project is making it accessible to more people than ever before.
