Reviving Shared Traditions Across Borders – TRADITION-CRAFT CBC

The TRADITION-CRAFT CBC project (HUSKROUA/23/S/2.2/004) strengthens shared Romanian–Ukrainian cultural heritage by building a cross-border support network for traditional crafts, cuisine and beekeeping in Satu Mare County (RO) and the Zakarpattia Region (UA). By combining fairs, workshops and educational programmes, the project brings traditions closer to local communities while fostering cultural exchange across the border.

Bringing crafts and traditions to life through fairs

In spring 2025, the project organised two major cross-border fairs in Carei and Satu Mare, welcoming local producers alongside invited craftspeople from Zakarpattia. Artisans showcased handmade products, traditional textiles, beekeeping goods and regional gastronomy, offering visitors a vivid experience of shared cultural roots.
A key project investment — 10 wooden exhibition houses — provided a uniform and attractive space for Ukrainian producers, reinforcing the cross-border character of the events and creating lasting infrastructure for future fairs.

Hands-on workshops for communities

Beyond public events, the project focused on practical knowledge transfer. In August, a traditional food preservation workshop brought together participants from both countries to learn authentic techniques, combining theory with hands-on preparation of local dishes. These activities not only preserved culinary heritage but also strengthened community ties through shared experiences.

Educating the next generation

The “Little Beekeeper” programme introduced children to traditional beekeeping through interactive learning, helping them understand the ecological importance of bees and the cultural value of this craft. By engaging young participants, the project ensures that traditions are not only preserved, but passed on to future generations.

Why it matters

TRADITION-CRAFT CBC shows how cultural heritage can become a living bridge between communities. By reviving traditions through shared experiences, practical learning and cross-border cooperation, the project contributes to stronger regional identity and long-term cultural sustainability.
