Within the framework of the Interreg VI-A NEXT Hungary-Slovakia-Romania-Ukraine Programme, the St. Damian Greek Catholic Hospital (Kisvárda) has successfully submitted a joint application with the Municipal non-comercial enterprise “Uzhgorod City Multidisciplinary Clinical Hospital” of Uzhgorod City Council, aiming to improve traumatology and surgical care at the project level – to improve the medical care of patients in need of care by renovating existing cubatures, increasing the safety of care by purchasing new medical equipment, developing joint professional protocols. The partners aim to create the conditions necessary for the care of war wounded by strengthening cooperation between the two hospitals.

The two hospitals are located 50 km apart, along the E573 highway, which is a road with frequent road accidents requiring immediate emergency and trauma care. After treatment in Kisvárda and after the life-threatening situation has been averted, the transfer of the affected Ukrainian patients to a cross-border receiving hospital should be arranged. Our aim is to have reliable, high quality hospital wards on both sides of the border, with the appropriate equipment to provide safe patient care. In addition, the hospital in Uzhhorod also receives military and civilian casualties of the ongoing war who require trauma and surgical care. Therefore, the traumatology departments of the two hospitals and the surgical department of the hospital in Uzhhorod will be renovated.

The project will not only improve physical conditions but also professional procedures, with both partners committing to organise professional training sessions to develop professional protocols. As a result of the project, the improvement of care will benefit the population, patients requiring trauma care and war wounded in and often outside our service area.
