Ocolul Silvic Codrii Satmarului

The LICHENNET project will introduce a harmonized, cost-effective, and scientifically robust methodology for assessing air quality across the HUSKROUA region (Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine) using corticolous lichens as bioindicators. By developing a new Lichen Air Quality Index (LAQI) and linking it with existing biodiversity and pollution datasets, the project will enable transboundary monitoring of NOx, SOx, and PM₂.₅ pollution—particularly in regions underserved by traditional sensor-based networks. This will significantly strengthen the capacity to detect, visualize, and respond to environmental risks.
The project will directly involve research institutes, NGOs, protected area authorities, citizen scientists, and national air quality agencies. Activities will include field surveys at 100 sites, development of a standardized sampling protocol, pollutant sensitivity calibration, training workshops in all four countries, and the launch of a public-facing data platform and mobile app for ongoing citizen engagement.
Ultimately, LICHENNET will benefit both decision-makers and the public. Authorities will gain actionable insights and tools for integrating lichen-based indicators into national and cross-border air quality strategies, in line with EU directives and the Carpathian Convention. Citizens and communities will benefit from better air quality awareness and engagement opportunities, while the broader scientific community will access open datasets and new methodologies scalable to other European regions.
